It’s a time known as middle school or junior high, but we call it the Transition Years because we recognize that your homeschool student is transitioning during these two years in the seventh and eighth grades from the elementary school years into more independence in preparation for high school science. Young students who were walked step-by-step through their curriculum are now instructed in independent learning techniques. In two short years, your student will build the confidence needed to move on to the rigors of a high school science curriculum. Apologia Science makes the transition easy for both the student and the parent.
This middle school physical science course is specifically designed to be the second course taken during junior high. It is created to give middle school students an understanding of the basic world that surrounds them each day of their lives and the forces in creation, so that they can appreciate the real-world relevance of scientific inquiry and the beauty of creation. We believe that students’ educations should prepare them for life, not just an academic year.
Our award-winning, homeschool, junior high physical science course covers:
• Measurement and Units so that students can convert between units in scientific study
• The Earth, Atmosphere, Hydrosphere, and Lithosphere so that students can appreciate the wonder of our blue planet
• Weather so that students can understand the factors that affect the Earth’s weather and how weather is predicted
• An Introduction to Physics to understand the mechanics of motion, forces, and energy
• Newton’s Laws and the Forces in Creation to understand friction, static and kinetic energy, gravity, electromagnetic forces, and electrical circuits
• Solar System, Stars, and Galaxies to introduce the wonders of our universe
• An Introduction to Chemistry for a basic introduction to atoms and molecules
Our award-winning, creation-based science curriculum helps students investigate, discover, recognize, appreciate, discuss, and understand the wonders of Creation.
Middle school students are actually taught the methods they will need to succeed in high school science courses. Using a conversational tone, we present challenging science concepts and thought-provoking experiments in an easily navigated, personalized format to help students methodically learn, self-check, and master difficult concepts before moving on. We also keep science relevant. Additional online materials are available through a book extras portal so that students can see science in action.

Because our texts are written in a conversational tone, this junior high textbook is the expert interacting with the student. There are no teacher manuals required.
A flexible daily schedule is provided in your student’s notebook so that he or she can independently work through science assignments while becoming self-sufficient in managing his or her time.
A typical week requires studying science about 1 hour a day for 5 days. During this time, students read an assigned portion of their textbook, stopping throughout each section to answer “On Your Own” questions to test their comprehension before moving forward. Students self-check their answers against the detailed answers provided at the end of each module.
Laboratory exercises are conducted throughout each module so that students have a hands-on lab component in their scientific study. These have been designed to easily work in the homeschool environment.
At the end of each of 16 modules which take about 2 weeks each to complete, there are Study Guides to help students review their materials before taking their exams. Detailed answers to these questions are provided in the Solutions Manual.
If a student is having difficulty with a module, optional module summaries are available to provide additional support towards a student’s retention and success.
Module exams and quarterly exams, as well as detailed answers, are provided in the Solutions Manual.
The purpose of the Student Notebook is to guide your student toward becoming more structured, logical, factual, and most importantly, independent!
The first step toward independence is knowing what to do and when to do it. The modules of our middle school physical science textbook have been broken down in the student notebook into daily lesson plans for your student to follow. Students can easily see their assignment and check when it is completed so you can easily track their progress as well.
Notebooks are strongly linked to their corresponding textbooks.
They provide structure space for:
Student’s Personal Notes: We teach your student how to take notes by creating graphics that pull the pertinent facts for your student’s attention. Each module has a section for specific notes.
On Your Own Questions: These questions are designed so that your student answers these questions as he or she is working through the text. The answers to the questions are found in the textbook so that students can self-check their knowledge and know if they should move on or reread a section.
Study Guide Questions: Are designed as a pre-test for your student to see if they are well prepared for the exam. Parents can find detailed answers to these questions in the Solutions Manual. Students should be encouraged to use their notebooks to answer these questions because this reinforces the importance of good notetaking skills.
Optional Summary Questions: These are optional study aides for those students who may need a little bit more time studying a particular module before taking a test and moving on in the textbook.
Lab Report Templates: Each experiment listed in the textbook has a lab report in the student notebook. Templates progress throughout the year from step-by-step instruction to full student independence.
Digging Deeper: These sections provide hands-on or web-based activities to help a student discover more about a particular subject, as well as encourage independent research and study.
What Does God’s Word Say: These sections direct the student to Scripture for a Biblical perspective on the subject matter.
If all we ever offer our students is a textbook version of science, they will never get to “own” a discovery that they make during an experiment. Our world is not a world of chaos, and once students begin to see that they can observe a phenomenon, ask questions, and set up a methodical test to answer questions, science will no longer be a class but rather a means to discover their world.
Throughout their academic school year, your students will conduct controlled experiments where they observe a problem, ask a question, formulate a testable hypothesis, and then conduct the experiment and analyze the data to see if their results support their hypothesis. It involves quantitative data that require measurements. The lab portion of Apologia guides students through this process.
Additionally, students will conduct descriptive experiments to use their 5 senses to make qualitative observations and describe what they learn. Again, our homeschool curriculum was designed with your student’s success in mind, and we guide students through this process with detailed descriptions and photographs.
This comprehensive homeschool middle school general science course was created to accommodate a wide range of student abilities. Some students, however, learn best when they can interact with others in an online setting and ask questions of a live instructor. With Apologia Online Academy, students can interact in real time with both their classmates and a professional instructor in a structured virtual classroom. Also, we offer recordings of all our live classes on the Online Academy Video-On-Demand Channel.
Apologia’s junior high science courses help your students interactively participate in their educations by fostering their natural inquisitiveness. We recognize that to cultivate curiosity, we must partner with it. Throughout their middle school years, your students will experience personal scientific encounters that turn facts into a meaningful and natural extension of what they already know about their world and their Creator. We thank you for considering Apologia science for your homeschool.
