5 Reasons to Switch Your Homeschool Math Curriculum

Kathryn Gomes|February 1, 2023

Are you considering switching math programs? Here are five reasons to consider switching your homeschool math curriculum to Exploring Creation with Mathematics from Apologia.

1. You Need a Shorter Lesson Length to Keep Your Student Engaged

Each activity and problem set is carefully crafted to engage kids and help them master new concepts, but we don’t overdo it. Kids need daily practice, but overly lengthy lessons and monotonous problem sets will quickly extinguish their enthusiasm. In this program, we give them just enough practice and then move on. On average, lessons should take around 30 minutes in early elementary and 45 minutes for higher grades.

We are using Apologia Math, Levels 1 and 2 in our homeschool. My kids never get bored of their math books since each lesson uses different manipulatives and activities to teach the concepts. I am so impressed with how well the books are written and especially love using generic manipulatives and household items we already have. My 2nd grader gets easily frustrated when things take too long or are too complicated, so each lesson’s amount of work is perfect for him! It usually takes him about 15-20 minutes per lesson.

2. You Want an Open-and-Go Curriculum with Minimal Parent Prep

Math 3 Student Text and Workbook Unit 2This program is open-and-go. It was designed to be used by busy homeschool parents who are juggling multiple responsibilities (and children)! The parent guide answer key includes thumbnails of the practice pages with answers printed right on top. You can check your child’s work quickly and easily. We’ve also included a suggested pacing guide and notes on every lesson with teaching tips. Activities use common household items, and a master list of supplies is provided so you can gather everything in advance.

Last year, my daughter was often in tears when she was doing math. However, this year she gets excited once she starts her lesson for the day; she loves it! We have really enjoyed this curriculum! Easy to use and prep for! Such a natural approach to math! I have tried so many math curriculums. This one is my favorite!

3. You Enjoy a Thoughtful, Colorful Design Layout

The pages of these books are exciting and inviting. We’ve used full-color and included lots of photos of kids enjoying mathematics. The layout isn’t cluttered with distracting images. We’ve kept struggling learners in mind with clean pages and white space to allow for better processing. Download a sample or watch one of our flip-through videos to catch a glimpse of the color and beauty of this program. Even better, look at it with your child and see what he or she thinks.

Love this math!!! As a high school math teacher I planned to just teach my children on my own when I decided to homeschool. I did want some sort of work book to work through and this program is designed exactly how I would have done it myself! We are beyond pleased!!! Easy to follow, not overwhelming, the extras and optional additions are fabulous, and it’s so fun and relatable.

4. Your Student Learns Well with Hands-on Activities

All concepts are introduced concretely first. Your child will be using beans, blocks, fraction tiles and so much more to act out the mathematical ideas. Kids love the engaging activities at the beginning of the lessons. And you’ll love how this tactile approach leads to lasting learning.

I simply cannot say enough about your AMAZING math program!!! It is PERFECT! This child who hated math last year is finishing up ahead of schedule and wants to keep going rather than to take a break until the fall!

5. You Want Math to Be Fun

There are many reasons to try this program, but fun is probably the greatest one. Imagine flipping math time in your house from a chore to something your child begs to do. At Apologia, we know that kids will learn more easily if they have fun. So, we added mazes, games, codes, and coloring pages to keep interest high and hearts happy. Kids are asking their parents if they can do a second lesson.

We purchased Exploring Creation with Mathematics, Levels 1 and 2 for my two children. Last year, my daughter was often in tears when she was doing math. However, this year she gets excited once she starts her lesson for the day; she loves it! Thank you! We have really enjoyed this curriculum! Easy to use and prep for! Such a natural approach to math! I have tried so many 1st grade math curriculums. This one is my favorite!
