Alyssa Esposito|July 12, 2023

So, you’re looking for the best 2nd grade homeschool curriculum? Whether you’ve just recently decided to bring your kids home and this is your first year homeschooling, you’ve just completed your first year, or you’re a homeschool veteran, congratulations are in order. You are doing an amazing thing for your family.

While we know homeschooling is one of the best decisions you can make, we also know that finding and selecting the best curriculum for your student can be challenging. There are so many options out there (and that’s a good problem to have!). So, we hope we can help make those decisions a little easier for you.

Our living books are designed to be engaging for every learning style, created with an open-and-go format, written from a Biblical perspective, with topics that are covered comprehensively. As an added bonus, due to the nature of our Charlotte Mason-style curriculum, your student will continue developing their reading and writing skills through the use of our science and Bible curriculum.

We’ve got just what you need for your 2nd grader’s math, science, and Bible curriculum needs.

Science

While our Young Explorer Series, written by Jeannie Fulbright, is designed for use with multiple ages and can be done in any order, a popular choice is completing the series in order of Creation. After God created light and separated the land from the sea, he created plants.

Genesis 1:11-19

And God said, “Let the earth sprout vegetation, plants[e] yielding seed, and fruit trees bearing fruit in which is their seed, each according to its kind, on the earth.” And it was so. The earth brought forth vegetation, plants yielding seed according to their own kinds, and trees bearing fruit in which is their seed, each according to its kind. And God saw that it was good. And there was evening and there was morning, the third day.

And God said, “Let there be lights in the expanse of the heavens to separate the day from the night. And let them be for signs and for seasons,[f] and for days and years, and let them be lights in the expanse of the heavens to give light upon the earth.” And it was so.  And God made the two great lights—the greater light to rule the day and the lesser light to rule the night—and the stars.  And God set them in the expanse of the heavens to give light on the earth, to rule over the day and over the night, and to separate the light from the darkness. And God saw that it was good. And there was evening and there was morning, the fourth day.

📖  Exploring Creation with Mathematics, Level 2 covers adding and subtracting 3-digit numbers, telling time, manipulating money, and learning more about measurement, data collection, and geometry, including 3D shapes. Utilizing a mastery approach, this course was designed to cultivate a love of numbers while building on your student’s ability to use numbers and mathematical symbols. Filled with activities, projects, and games, your student will begin to apply the math they have learned to their lives and understand how they can manipulate numbers as they investigate the world and see the greater connections between our world and our God.

Bible

At Apologia, we know that your number one priority is to raise your children in the nurture and admonition of the Lord (Ephesians 6:4). Because we take that so seriously, our Bible curriculum, The Word in Motion, was designed to be thorough, understandable, engaging and easy-to-use.

📖  Apologia’s The Word in Motion: New Testament, by Rachael Carman, is the second volume in an illustrated, two-part Bible curriculum that equips students to know, live, and share the Word of God. As kids understand how the books of the Bible work together to tell the larger story of God’s love for people, they begin to understand God better and read the Word with purpose, passion, and real understanding.

The Word in Motion: New TestamentThe Word in Motion New Testament Bible curriculum takes the intimidation out of teaching Scripture by combining streaming video instruction with vibrant illustrations, fun-to-read narratives, engaging discussion questions, and memorable character profiles. From the events leading up to the birth of Jesus to the apocalyptic vision the Apostle John received on the island of Patmos, this course tells the story depicted in Scripture in an easy-to-follow, chronological format that equips your student to know, live out and share the Word of God more.

When we offer our students opportunities to learn in different ways (including movement), abstract concepts click, and learning sticks in new ways. Each New Testament lesson incorporates multiple learning styles—seeing, hearing, moving, talking, and repeating—in a way that engages your student’s head, heart, and hands. And when they complete the course, students will be able to tell the story of God and His people using a series of keywords, memory verses, and hand motions.
