Open Minds Understand Scripture – Luke 24:45
“Then he opened their minds so they could understand the Scriptures.” Luke 24:45
Only Open Minds Understand Scripture
Scoffers do not have an open mind toward Jesus; they do not have open minds that understand the scripture. So, it makes sense that the Bible seem foolish to them. It’s Christ who illuminates His Word to us for understanding, and without His help, some people can read the entire Bible and not become a Christian. We must remember this when talking to non-believers. Without the Spirit of God working in them, skeptics will not be able to comprehend the truths of Scripture.
Open Minds vs. Cultural Biases
One thing we need to remember when sharing our faith is that people have biases—they’re going to be partial to their existing mindset. We need to find out what they believe and why; this helps when approaching the topic of Jesus as Lord and Savior of humanity. We live in a culture where Christian beliefs are viewed as personal opinions, or values, rather than facts. The only universally accepted form of fact today is science. Yet, we know that science cannot prove everything; it only measures the material aspects of life, not the immaterial things like emotions, thoughts, or dreams. Science denies anything supernatural.
Combat Relativism With Objective Truth
Western culture highly values non-traditional views and doesn’t see any one view as being objectively true. This is called Relativism. A good technique to combat Relativism is to show that moral truth is not relative. For example, murder is wrong. Why do we all believe this? Because, innately, there exists a stamp inside the human soul of acceptable human behavior. That stamp comes from a Stamp Maker, aka God, who places these moral truths inside of us. This is objective moral truth, and upon closer examination, it shows relativism is false because objective truth does exist. Then we can tell them about the Truth incarnate in Jesus Christ.
