Grace, Grace, Marvelous Grace

Davis Carman|July 7, 2025

Grace touches us all deeply, a virtue that’s often spoken about but sometimes overlooked in the hustle of daily life. Despite this, grace is something we inherently need, even if it doesn’t always occur to us.

Reflecting on grace brings to mind a powerful story from the Scriptures about King David and a young man named Mephibosheth, crippled after his family fell from power. This story, found in 2 Samuel, beautifully illustrates the concept of grace in action and offers a profound lesson for everyone.

Grace Extended to Mephibosheth

After the deaths of King Saul and Jonathan, David was prepared to take the throne of Israel. Tradition often dictated that the new king would eliminate the previous monarch’s family to secure his rule. Yet, David sought a path defined by compassion, famously asking, “Is there still anyone left in the house of Saul, that I may show him kindness for Jonathan’s sake?” (2 Samuel 9:1).

Mephibosheth, just five years old when his nurse dropped him in a hurried escape, became crippled in both feet (2 Samuel 4:4). With this inquiry, he found himself summoned by King David. Despite the fear Mephibosheth might have felt, David calmed him, saying, “Do not fear, for I will show you kindness for the sake of your father Jonathan, and I will restore to you all the land of Saul your father, and you shall eat at my table always” (2 Samuel 9:7). This was a remarkable act of compassion and grace.

Finding Grace in Our Lives

Much like Mephibosheth, there are times when we feel crippled, lonely, or afraid. During these moments, it’s important to remember the grace that’s available through faith, family, and friends—unconditional love and kindness.

Our responsibility extends beyond accepting grace; we must also extend it to others. This includes loved ones, acquaintances, strangers, and even those we find difficult to love. Grace doesn’t discriminate; it encompasses everyone, even our adversaries.

Jesus’ teaching to love our enemies and pray for those who mistreat us highlights both the challenge and the essential nature of extending grace fully.

A Call for a Spirit of Grace

The essence of today’s message is to strive towards being generous givers of grace. Seek opportunities to share blessings and build a compassionate community. Each action taken towards a gracious life paves the way for others to seek and demonstrate love.

As we navigate our daily lives, let our actions reflect the heart of grace. Embrace those around us, serve with humility, and ensure everyone we meet experiences the warmth of a gracious spirit.

With a mindful approach to grace, we can, together, create a positive ripple that impacts all around us.
