Psalm 37: Delight in the Lord

Davis Carman|December 20, 2016

Take delight in the Lord, and He will give you the desires of your heart. (Psalm 37:4)

Psalm 37 is perhaps best known for this promise: “Take delight in the Lord, and He will give you the desires of your heart.” But there’s a lot more going on here, all of which expands on the theme of delighting in the Lord.

Let’s take a closer look at this psalm and glean some valuable wisdom.

Do not fret (verse 1). Evil and those who carry it out will be with us until the end. But this is no reason to worry because God is sovereign and has supreme authority over all things.

Trust in the Lord (verse 3). The Lord is in control of your future and the destiny of all men, good and evil. You can trust in Him.

Take delight in the Lord (verse 4). Be sure your desires are in line with God’s. Find delight in Him, and He will give you what your heart longs for.

Commit your way to the Lord (verse 5). Instead of feeling troubled and wringing your hands anxiously, dedicate your day and life to Him. Give the Holy Spirit control over your words and actions and choose to keep the commandments of God.

Be still before the Lord (verse 7). Be quiet and listen patiently for Him to speak to your heart. Wait for Him to act on your behalf.

Refrain from anger and wrath (verse 8). Avoid evil. “Be quick to listen, slow to speak, and slow to become angry” (James 1:19). Otherwise, you will be doomed to the same horrible fate as those whom God will condemn.

Turn from evil and do good (verse 27). God loves you so much that He endured the humiliation of the cross rather than live without you, and He wants you to be with Him forever.
Wait for the Lord (verse 34). Walk in His ways, and He will lift you up. Eventually, you will see the demise of the wicked.

Consider the blameless (verse 37). See how He rewards those who love righteousness. You have a bright future filled with God’s provision, peace, and presence. The Lord is truly your salvation!

Father, I trust in you. Help me to wait patiently for you to deal with the evil that surrounds me. Make my desires the same as yours. Help me to stay far away from anger and worry. Help me to live blameless and upright for your name’s sake and my good.

Walking by faith and enjoying the homeschooling adventure of a lifetime!
