The Heavenly Voice of God

Davis Carman|August 31, 2022

The heavens declare the glory of God, and the sky above proclaims his handiwork. (Psalm 19:1)

God speaks in many ways. Some heard His voice audibly. Moses was the first to hear the voice of God directly when he encountered the burning bush. Years later, God called out to the young Samuel in the middle of the night. When Elijah was ready to hear, the voice of God did not sound like wind, or thunder, or an earthquake. Surprisingly it came in a small, still voice.

God also spoke to His people through prophets and miracles. One of the most unusual ways God spoke was through Balaam’s donkey.

You may or may not have noticed, but one of the “loudest” and most visible ways God speaks is through His creation. This devotional began with verse one of Psalm 19. Check out the next few verses of that Psalm. Days pour out speech. Nights reveal knowledge. There is no place where His voice is not heard. The voice of nature goes out through all the earth and to the ends of the world. Scripture describes the voice of God as being in the wind and the lightning (Psalm 29).

Are you being quiet right now? Are you listening for a word of instruction from God? Speak Lord, for Your servant is ready and waiting.

Man can’t control the weather. That is God’s domain. He’ll heat things up or cool things down at His command. He’ll bring torrential rains and severe droughts to wherever He chooses and whenever He pleases. Even hurricanes, tornadoes, and devastating fires only happen as God sees fit. He is sovereign over every storm on this planet and every storm in your life. This is actually very good news. Who could better decide what’s best than the one and only loving, merciful, and gracious God Almighty, Creator of heaven and earth? And as we so often observe, out of the ashes burst forth new and abundant life.

Jesus calmed the storm with His words, “Peace! Be still!” (Mark 4:39). Therefore, you can praise Him in the storms of life. Remember that He is in charge of the winds, the waters, the sun, the moon, the stars, and every minute of your life. He loves you, and He has plans for you to bring Him glory. So, look to Him, listen to Him, and worship His holy name.

Dear Father in Heaven,

Thank You for the ways You have guided my way, directed and redirected my steps. At times, it is hard for me to hear or discern Your voice. But I look back and remember how You have been faithful. I look at creation and am reminded that You are God, and I am Yours. I am glad to be in Your loving care. So, I wait upon You and open my heart to listen carefully for Your small, still, and gentle voice. Then may the words of my mouth and the meditation of my heart be pleasing and acceptable in Your sight, O Lord my rock and my redeemer. In the holy name of Jesus. Amen.

Walking by faith and enjoying the homeschooling adventure of a lifetime!
