The Transition Years – Eighth Grade

It’s a time known as middle school or junior high, but we call it the Transition Years because we recognize that your homeschool student is transitioning during these two years in the seventh and eighth grades from the elementary school years into more independence in preparation for high school science. Young students who were walked step-by-step through their curriculum are now instructed in independent learning techniques. In two short years, your student will build the confidence needed to move on to the rigors of a high school science curriculum. Middle school students are taught the methods they will need to succeed in high school science courses. Using a conversational tone, we present challenging science concepts and thought-provoking experiments in an easily navigated, personalized format to help students methodically learn, self-check, and master difficult concepts before moving on. We also keep science relevant. Additional online materials are available through a book extras portal so that students can see science in action.

Overview – Eighth Grade Homeschool Middle School Physical Science Curriculum

This middle school physical science course is specifically designed to be the second course taken during junior high. It is created to give middle school students an understanding of the basic world that surrounds them each day of their lives and the forces in creation, so that they can appreciate the real-world relevance of scientific inquiry and the beauty of creation. We believe that students’ educations should prepare them for life, not just an academic year.

Our award-winning, homeschool, junior high physical science course covers:

  • The basics of science including the scientific process, scientific theories and laws, inferences and models, and measurement and units
  • Chemistry including properties and states of matter, atomic structure and the periodic table, chemical bonds and reactions and energy
  • Physics including motion, forces, energy, waves and sound, light and electricity and magnetism
  • Earth Science including the Earth’s structure and processes and our atmosphere and beyond
  • Chemistry and Physics in the life sciences
  • Physical Science research

If all we ever offer our students is a textbook version of science, they will never get to “own” a discovery that they make during an experiment. Our world is not a world of chaos, and once students begin to see that they can observe a phenomenon, ask questions, and set up a methodical test to answer questions, science will no longer be a class but rather a means to discover their world.

Throughout their academic school year, your students will conduct controlled experiments where they observe a problem, ask a question, formulate a testable hypothesis, and then conduct the experiment and analyze the data to see if their results support their hypothesis. It involves quantitative data that require measurements. The lab portion of Apologia guides students through this process.

Additionally, students will conduct descriptive experiments to use their 5 senses to make qualitative observations and describe what they learn. Again, our homeschool curriculum was designed with your student’s success in mind, and we guide students through this process with detailed descriptions and photographs.

Physical Science: Lesson Planning and Experiments

This middle school science course for homeschool students consists of a Textbook, Solutions and Test Manual, and Student Notebook as the 3 core pieces.

Lesson Planning

Because our texts are written in a conversational tone, this junior high textbook is the expert interacting with the student. There are no teacher manuals required.

A flexible daily schedule is provided in your student’s notebook so that he or she can independently work through science assignments while becoming self-sufficient in managing his or her time.

A typical week requires studying science about 1 hour a day for 4 days. During this time, students read an assigned portion of their textbook, stopping throughout each section to answer “On Your Own” questions to test their comprehension before moving forward. Students self-check their answers against the detailed answers provided at the end of each module.

Laboratory exercises are conducted throughout each module so that students have a hands-on lab component in their scientific study. These have been designed to easily work in the homeschool environment.

At the end of each of 15 modules which take about 2 weeks each to complete, there are Study Guides to help students review their materials before taking their exams. Detailed answers to these questions are provided in the Solutions and Test Manual.

Labs and Experiments

General lab report spaces are provided in the Student Notebook for each activity so that the students learn proper formatting and what is expected of them. All of the experiments in this course utilize easy-to-obtain household materials, so no special equipment is necessary, yet complex scientific principles are easy to explore and understand.

Students are learning at all of the stages of scientific study in a relaxed atmosphere that lets the student lead.

  • Experiments are clearly designated in the textbook.
  • Students conduct the experiment and record findings on specially created lab report forms found in their Student Notebook.
