Why We Love Apologia Math

Alyssa Esposito|February 13, 2022

Many students grow up loving math. They love the way it’s a universally understood language and that it has finite answers and patterns. Breezing through their curriculum, they enjoy all things numbers. But there are also many students who struggle with, or simply don’t enjoy math. For those students, there was a point in time, whether it was while learning about fractions, division or algebra, where their love of learning math was squelched. It may have been due to a lack of creativity or simply from the frustration that builds as each new lesson gets increasingly more difficult. So wouldn’t it be amazing to find a curriculum that stopped the “I hate math!” before it even began?

“This math curriculum has been a game-changer in our house! I would battle so much with my daughter over math. Now, she asks to do it first and sometimes completes more than what is required! Thank you for releasing a product that has given me confidence we can continue homeschooling without the fight every day.”   – homeschool mom

Kathryn (Bell) Gomes, daughter of Apologia author, Debra Bell, and a homeschool student herself, is on a journey to create a math curriculum that fosters your child’s love of learning in math. She uses engaging, hands-on activities, a customizable schedule, and short, 20-minute lessons to help you keep your child’s attention!

“We are using Apologia Math, Levels 1 and 2 in our homeschool. My kids never get bored of their math books since each lesson uses different manipulatives and activities to teach the concepts. I am so impressed with how well the books are written and especially love using generic manipulatives and household items we already have.

My 2nd grader gets easily frustrated when things take too long or are too complicated, so each lesson’s amount of work is perfect for him! It usually takes him about 15-20 minutes per lesson.”   – homeschool mom

Kathryn (Bell) Gomes earned her Bachelor’s Degree in Mathematics from the University of Pittsburgh and her Masters in Education in Mathematics from the University of Pennsylvania. After that, she taught math to homeschoolers for 13 years prior to writing this curriculum, so she is familiar with the challenges of learning math at home. She is also passionate about helping children see the beauty in math. By integrating scripture into the curriculum, she illustrates how math is a part of God’s creation.

Here are examples from Exploring Creation with Mathematics.

“When we recognize a shape in nature, it reminds us of our Creator. Our God loves beauty, and He has used principles of math and geometry to make the world more beautiful.”

(Gomes, Kathryn, Exploring Creation with Mathematics: Level 1, Pg. 287.)

Exploring Creation with Mathematics: Level 1 gets your child off to a great start learning about addition, subtraction, place value, measurement and data, and geometry!

“It’s important to realize, however, that in all these examples humans just found different ways to record the amounts that God already put in His creation. We can create new systems for recording and manipulating numbers, but only God can create the numbers themselves.”

(Gomes, Kathryn, Exploring Creation with Mathematics: Level 2, Pg. 14.)

In Exploring Creation with Mathematics: Level 2, your child will dig deeper into place value, patterns such as even and odd numbers, addition, subtraction, money, time, measurement, data and graphs, and geometry!

“In one of His parables, Jesus used the concept of multiplication to explain how the Word of God produces fruit in our lives. He told a story about four seeds in the book of Matthew. Still, others fell on good ground and produced a crop: some 100, some 60, and some 30 times what was sown. Matthew 13:8”

(Gomes, Kathryn, Exploring Creation with Mathematics: Level 3, Pg. 76.)

Exploring Creation with Mathematics: Level 3 covers addition, subtraction, multiplication, division, data collection and graphing, fractions, and geometry! As the curriculum gets more difficult with each level, the connection to our Creator goes into more depth as well!
