An Artful Labor of Love

Dr. Whit Jones has prepared an excellent American literature anthology for high school students (ideal for both classroom and homeschool instruction). Would you like to tour American literary classics with a seasoned college professor who wisely draws out the best in the pieces he has selected? A kindly professor who fashioned his curricula to bless his own children with a winsome course of study for their homeschooling years? Then this is the anthology for you. American Literature, 2nd Edition, is an artful labor of love, evident from the introductory paragraphs Jones penned on Beauty and Truth, on the Power of Stories, and on Evil in Literature to the final online resources he included on testing, grammar, essay composition, and grading. Likewise, in each section, Dr. Jones sets the background beautifully with an insightful overview of the period for consideration, replete with biblical insights while keeping his literary topic clear and historically situated. Then onto the text themselves, abundant, carefully chosen, featuring just enough pictures and media to supplement the texts without becoming too busy or distracting. Apologia did wonderful work setting columns, colors, contrasts, fonts, and overall design to be attractive and engaging, easy for the eye to follow, leaving room for note-taking. Finally, Dr. Jones' reading questions and assignments are excellently crafted to provide good guidance while encouraging thoughtful reflection from the reader. It's everything one could ask for in an anthology. From the Colonial Age to the Constitution to Modern times, from the poetry of Anne Bradstreet to Poe and Robert Frost, from the Romantic to the Existentialist to the comedic to the Southern Gothic, herein lies a literary plenty to bless every American Christian soul. Enjoy the feast Dr. Jones has set!
