Human beings are charged with subduing the earth and having dominion over it (Gen 1:28). Harnessing the resources of the earth to increase productivity and improve the effectiveness of our stewardship is a part of that work. In other words, advances in technology provide new tools to accomplish our earthly purpose. Artificial Intelligence (AI) is one of those tools.
Apologia approaches AI cautiously and prudently, recognizing both its dangers and benefits. We are well aware of AI “hallucinations” and the high rate of false attribution common to AI responses. To that end, Apologia is committed to human-written books using verified primary sources.
Where appropriate, Apologia utilizes various AI tools to improve efficiency, not to generate primary content. Some examples include using tools within existing software to help edit and finalize graphics and video backgrounds, audio editing, and occasional copy editing (for grammar, punctuation, and formatting, not composition). AI is built into most search engines, so avoiding its use during initial research is difficult. We understand that AI output can contain errors, so Apologia requires authors, teachers, and content creators to verify the results and ensure they draw from reputable sources that are accurately cited. AI is never used as a source itself.
Human creativity is a gift from God, and an expression of his character. Therefore, Apologia is deeply committed to honoring God’s command of stewardship by creating curriculum that is human-generated and God-centered.
