North Carolina Education Savings Account FAQs

  • How do ESA funds work in North Carolina?

Once approved, ESA funds are managed through an account provided by the North Carolina State Education Assistance Authority (NCSEAA), typically via a secure online portal.

Parents and guardians can then use those funds to pay for a variety of approved educational expenses, including tuition and fees at eligible private or nonpublic schools, homeschool curriculum and materials, tutoring, therapies, educational technology, and other services tailored to the student’s needs.

For families using private-school tuition or other non-home-school settings, the funds are applied first to tuition and required fees; any remaining funds may be used for other qualifying expenses, as permitted.

  • How much money can families receive through the NC ESA program?

The standard award under the ESA program in North Carolina is $9,000 per student per year.

For students with specific, designated high-need disabilities, the award may be increased to up to $17,000 per year. These funds are meant to cover approved educational and therapy-related expenses, depending on the student’s needs and chosen academic path.

  • Are ESA funds allowed for religious or faith-based education?

Yes – they are allowed for religious or faith-based education. Many ESA programs enable families to use funds at accredited religious schools and home-based curriculums. For more information, check the North Carolina ESA page.
