Know God: The Surprising First Step to Successful Homeschooling

Davis Carman|July 2, 2026

If there is one thing I’ve learned after years of homeschooling, parenting, and walking with the Lord, it’s this: everything rises and falls on what we believe about God.

When families begin homeschooling, they often focus on curriculum, schedules, teaching methods, and academic goals. Those things matter, but they are not the foundation. The foundation is knowing God—who He is, what He has promised, and how He works in the lives of His people.

The homeschool journey is too big, too important, and too challenging to navigate apart from Him.

God is faithful

First, you need to know that God is faithful to complete the work He begins. When God calls parents to disciple and educate their children, He does not abandon them halfway through the process. There will be difficult days. There will be moments when you wonder if anything is working. But God’s faithfulness does not depend on your feelings or your circumstances. The same God who called you is the God who will sustain you. He is at work in you, your children, and your homeschool, even when you cannot see immediate results.

God is Worthy

You also need to know that God is worthy. The goal of homeschooling is not simply to produce well-educated students. It is raising young men and women who know, love, enjoy, and glorify God. Our efforts find their ultimate purpose in Him. Every math lesson, science experiment, read-aloud, and family conversation can become an opportunity to point our children toward the greatness of their Creator. Homeschooling is not merely an educational choice; it is an act of worship when done for His glory.

God is the Great Redeemer

You need to know that God is the Great Redeemer. Every family carries regrets. Perhaps you started homeschooling later than you hoped, you’ve made mistakes along the way, or there are strained relationships, lost opportunities, or seasons you wish you could relive. The good news of the gospel is that God specializes in redemption. He restores what seems broken. He brings beauty from ashes. No family is beyond His ability to redeem and transform.

God is the Answer

You also need to know that God is the answer. When you face challenges with a struggling learner, a rebellious child, financial pressures, or uncertainty about the future, your ultimate hope is not found in a new curriculum, a better planner, or the latest educational trend. Those tools may help, but they are not the answer. God Himself is the source of wisdom, direction, and peace. The more we seek Him, the better equipped we are to face whatever homeschooling brings our way.

God is Enough

Finally, you need to know that God is enough. That truth may be the hardest one to embrace. We often feel inadequate because, frankly, we are. But homeschooling was never intended to be a demonstration of our sufficiency. It is an opportunity to experience His. God has never been limited by ordinary parents who trust Him. In fact, He delights in using weak vessels so that His strength becomes unmistakably clear.

Conclusion

As we begin this series, start here: know God. I’m not talking about knowing merely facts about Him, but knowing His character, His promises, and His heart. When you know God, everything else in your homeschool begins to find its proper place. And when challenges come—as they certainly will—you will have a foundation strong enough to stand.
