Know Yourself: The Truth About Being Qualified to Homeschool

Davis Carman|July 6, 2026

One of the most common questions I hear from parents considering homeschooling is, “Am I qualified?

It’s an understandable question. After all, most of us have never been trained as professional educators. We know our weaknesses, the subjects we struggled with in school, and our limitations.

The First Two Things You Need to Know

That’s why the second thing you need to know on your homeschool journey is yourself. And strangely enough, the first thing you need to know about yourself is this: you can’t do this, at least not on your own.

The task of shaping hearts, discipling children, preparing them for life, and helping them discover God’s purpose is far bigger than any parent’s natural abilities. If homeschooling success depended entirely on our wisdom, patience, consistency, and expertise, every one of us would fail. That realization isn’t discouraging—it’s actually freeing. Because once you understand that you can’t do this alone, you begin to understand how desperately you need God.

Homeschooling has a way of exposing our weaknesses. It reveals impatience we didn’t know we had. It uncovers pride, fear, insecurity, and self-reliance. But that’s not a flaw in the process; it’s one of God’s purposes in it. As we teach our children, God is teaching us. As we train them, He is shaping us. Homeschooling becomes a daily reminder that our sufficiency comes from Him.

You Are Qualified

Yet while you need God, you should also know something else about yourself: you are qualified.

And that is not because you have all the answers, you hold a teaching degree, or because you never make mistakes. You are qualified because God intentionally placed these children in your home. He could have chosen anyone to be their parent, but He chose you. No one knows your children better, loves them more deeply, or has been given the same responsibility or opportunity to influence their lives. The world may measure qualification by credentials, but God often measures it by calling and faithfulness.

You’re Not Alone

You also need to know that you are not alone.

One of the enemy’s favorite tactics is isolation. He wants parents to believe they are the only ones struggling, questioning, or feeling overwhelmed. But homeschooling families all across the country are walking a similar path. More importantly, God Himself walks with you. He has provided His Spirit, His Word, and a community of believers to encourage and strengthen you along the way. Homeschooling was never meant to be a solo endeavor.

You Will Be Amazed

And finally, you need to know this: you will be amazed—not necessarily by perfect test scores or flawless lesson plans—but you will be amazed by what God does.

You will watch your children grow in ways you never expected, see relationships deepen, and witness moments of insight, character development, and spiritual growth that remind you why you started this journey in the first place.

And perhaps most surprising of all, you will be amazed by how much God changes you. The homeschool journey is not just about educating your children; it is about transforming an entire family.

So know yourself well enough to admit your weaknesses, to depend on God, and to embrace the calling He has given you. When you do, you may discover that God can accomplish far more through an ordinary parent than you ever imagined possible.
