Description
Looking to delve into the intricate mechanisms by which God’s Creation operates? Look no further! This exciting live chemistry class is designed to introduce high school students to the essential principles of chemistry and provide a solid foundation for future collegiate studies.
At the core of our course are experimentation and problem-solving. You’ll be
challenged to think critically about real-world problems using the scientific
method. With thirty-one experiments to complete, you’ll have plenty of
opportunities to explore the practical side of chemistry. All experiments can be
performed at home using items found around the house or easily obtained
from a local store. Throughout the course, you’ll keep detailed lab notes and
learn to write formal laboratory reports, honing your skills as a young scientist.
Throughout the course, you’ll keep detailed lab notes and learn to write formal laboratory reports, honing your skills as a young scientist. Our course structure is designed to help you succeed. Each week, you’ll read the textbook and answer “On Your Own” problems before attending a 90-minute live lecture. During these sessions, we’ll explore some of the more nuanced points of the material, providing insights that will help you master the subject matter in an entertaining way
Syllabus
View SyllabusRequired Class Materials
- Exploring Creation with Chemistry, 3rd Edition, Plourde (NOTE: The 2nd edition book is not compatible with this course.)
- Exploring Creation with Chemistry Solutions and Tests, 3rd Edition
- All laboratory materials (listed in the book’s appendix) NOTE: Purchase as much of this in advance as you can to minimize trips to the store; however, perishable items, such as cabbage, will need to be purchased later
as needed.
• Any 2 or 3-function scientific or graphing calculator
• Any word processing program (e.g., Microsoft Word)
Recommended Class Materials
- Exploring Creation with Chemistry Student Notebook, 3rd Edition
- Official Chemistry Glassware Set
- This does not include all the laboratory materials but does include more niche items such as beakers, goggles, and litmus paper. You will still need to buy additional laboratory materials listed in the book’s appendix.
- If you do not get this glassware set, you will find that kitchen materials can be substituted as needed for many items, while specialty items such as the litmus paper can be ordered from other online retailers
- The following materials are included in the glassware set, but can be
ordered individually- Litmus paper (both red and blue)
- Precise mass scale (must measure the range, 0 to 500 grams)
- Glass analog (not digital) thermometer (Range: -10 to 110 °C)
